Charles Onyegbule Uzoaru, M.D. was born in Aguneze Ahiara, Imo State, Nigeria. His mother had nine children, only two survived; and he was the last born of their mother. His Primary School Education was at St. Matthias School, Aguneze Ahiara where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate with honors in 1958. He attended College of the Immaculate Conception (C.I.C) Enugu (1961-1965) and had a grade one West African School Certificate. From there, he went to teach at Assumpta Girls’ Secondary School, Ikenanzizi, Obowo. The School system was interrupted by the Nigeria-Biafra war. He served in the Biafra Army.
Immediately after the war, he enrolled at Columbia University in New York (1971-1974). He was on the Dean’s list, and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia University in 1974 with a major in Biochemistry.
From there, we went to the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine in Philadelphia (1974-1977) where he obtained his M.D. Degree in 1977. He did his Internship and Residency training at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (1977-1981). Since then, he has practices Obstetrics and Gynecology in the United States of America.
He held several positions in different hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Among his several positions, he was the Director, Health Services of Hudson County, Jersey City, New Jersey (1981-1983); Director, Employee Health Services, United Presbyterian Hospital, Newark, New Jersey (1981-1983); Director, OB/GYN, Gladys Dickenson Clinic, Newark, New Jersey (1984-1994); Director, OB/GYN, AD-House Teenage Pregnancy Clinic, Newark, New Jersey (1994-1998); Chief of Gynecology department, East Orange General Hospital, East Orange, New Jersey (1982-1996).
He also worked as an Emergency Physician at the United Presbyterian Hospital, Newark, New Jersey and as a gynecologist at the VD Clinic in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was actively involved in training Resident Doctors in Obstetrics & Gynecology at St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, New Jersey and he supervised the Residency Clinic from 1988-2001.
Dr. Uzoaru is a philosopher and a Poet. Several of his poems have been published in international poetry journals over the years and he has always maintained a very strong interest in Ahiara Mbaise, his hometown. He set up Madonna Medical Center in Aguneze; a rural hospital that is managed by the Reverend Sisters under the supervision of the Catholic Diocese. He is a devoted family man; surrounded by his wife, children and grand-children.
